Through the Office of Cultural Affairs, the City of San José offers several programs of financial support to ensure a continuing and rich variety of cultural opportunities for its residents as well as visitors to the city.
Festival, Parade and Celebration (FPC) Grants offer financial support for San José community festivals, parades and celebrations that are held for the economic enhancement, cultural enrichment and/or promotion of the City of San José. Arts Grants encourage the production and presentation of music, theater, literary arts and media arts.
The minimum FPC grant award will be $2,500, if a grant is awarded. The grant award to any event being held for the first time is limited to $5,000. The grant award may not exceed 50% of the total event expenditure budget. In 2009-10, a total of $331,669 was granted to 23 applicants. Funds for 20010-11 are expected to be lower.
FPC grants do not support the following:
The City will not grant funds for a religious purpose, including for the promotion of any sect, church, creed or sectarian organization, nor to conduct any religious service or ceremony, nor for the inhibition or promotion of religion, nor to convey a religious message.
The City will not grant funds for political advocacy efforts for or against a political candidate, ballot measure or bill.
Events that are conducted solely or primarily as fund-raisers will not be eligible for funding.
How to Apply
Applications are accepted once a year in January for events that take place the following July through June. Applicants must be from qualified San Jose based nonprofit organizations. Cash grants are awarded in a competitive process based on the merit of the grant applications.
