PRNS to Provide Alma Area Youth Access to Nutritious Meals this Summer

In the summer of 2018, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Out of School Time Program served 18,814 meals to youth at Roosevelt, Mayfair, Bascom and Seven Trees community centers. This year, PRNS received a $32,000 grant from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) to increase access to healthy foods for San José youth in the Alma/Gardner neighborhoods. The grant will support a new Summer Food Service program at the Alma Youth Center. The program will serve approximately 1,500 meals, and provide field trip opportunities. Additionally, it will fund a variety of family engagement events in Out of School Time Programs. PRNS will receive additional support from NRPA to promote nutritional literacy and gardening curricula to help instill life-long healthy habits. For more information, contact Neil Rufino, PRNS Deputy Director, at 408-535-3576
