Children's Musical Theater of San Josehttp://www.cmtsj.orgThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeSix young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.6 - 12Montgomery Theater

Ives Quartethttp://www.ivesquartet.orgWhy We PlayThis one hour lecture/demonstration focuses on the theme of "Play" for the Ives Quartet. "Play" defines who we are as human beings -- how we learn, grow and love. It excites, engages, inspires and renews us and is essential to our experience as a creative species. To us, "play" of course means performing music with an audience. But it also is central to how we select, learn and make interpretive choices about music.4 - 8Theatre on San Pedro Square

Opera San Josehttp://www.operasj.orgLa Cenerentola (Cinderella) by G. Rossini sung in Italian with English supertitles. What happens when you take the "bippity-boppity-boo" out of Cinderella? You get something even more magical -- Rossini's enchanting La Cenerentola. This isn't Rodgers and Hammerstein or Walt Disney -- no singing mice, fairy godmother, or glass slippers. There is a charming prince, however, as well as obnoxious stepsisters, a stepfather, and a matching pair of diamond bracelets. And everything ends happily in a blaze of glorious coloratura. The Cinderella in this opera is named Angelina, and she is as kind and gentle and forgiving as her name implies. And because this is a Rossini opera, Angelina and the rest of the cast also possess everlasting energy and exceptional vocal ability. The music is fast, fast, fast, and the action is at full throttle. This is comedy in the fast lane, with dazzling music and vocal pyrotechnics.
Visit www.operasj.org for complete synopsis. Study Guide sent to all schools attending performance.
Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro sung in Italian with English supertitles. What do you do when your married boss makes a play for your fiancée? If it's the 18th century and you're a lowly valet, you're supposed to look the other way. But if your name is Figaro and your clever fiancée, Susanna, is in league with your boss's unhappy wife, then you just might succeed in making your lecherous employer -- and indeed his whole decadent social class -- look pretty foolish. At once humorous and touching, this madcap masterpiece represents the crowning glory of Mozart's unparalled brilliance. Lust collides with love through a series of hilarious deceptions, famous melodies, and a richly varied and beautiful score. The Marriage of Figaro, for very good reason, is often described as the most perfect comic opera ever written.
Visit www.operasj.org for complete synopsis. Study Guide sent to all schools attending performance.

Student Matinee: A Christmas Story by Philip GrecianChristmas is a time of great expectations, especially through the eyes of a child. For nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, that great expectation is a genuine Red Ryder 200 Shot Carbine Action Air rifle. No self-respecting cowboy would be without one. Unfortunately, his mother, teacher and even the Santa Claus toiling away at Goldblatt's Department Store have the same reaction to his Christmas wish, "You'll shoot your eye out!" But for Ralphie, the longing for that special BB gun symbolizes maturity, responsibility, adventure and manhood. Based on the touching film that has become a modern day holiday tradition, A Christmas Story returns to delight the whole family and fill you with the spirit of the season.4 - 12San Jose Repertory Theater

Five phenomenal artists and a jumpin' jazz band take you through the pain and triumphs of the African-American experience during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s. It was the Golden Age of Jazz with places like the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom where snappy swing music, snazzy jazz and the stride piano infused the energy of the country. Life and love are song and dance in this funny, jazzy musical featuring the seminal Fats Waller tunes, "Honeysuckle Rose," Ain't Misbehavin'," "Black & Blue," "The Joint is Jumpin'" and "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling."4 - 12San Jose Repertory Theater

Student Matinee: Groundswell by Ian BruceThe hottest new play to come out of South Africa! The story takes place in a beachfront guest lodge on the jagged edge of the South African diamond coast, where we find caretakers Johan, a white ex-cop, and Thami, the black gardener, gunning for one last chance at a better life. When Smith, a wealthy businessman, arrives at the lodge on a foggy evening, the two desperate friends see Smith as the perfect investor for their "get rich" scheme to buy a government-run diamond concession -- tossing a glimmer of hope and promise into their difficult lives. This haunting psychological thriller hungers, hopes and promises for a just post-apartheid society, while asking: How do we live together after apartheid? Where did all the promise and hope go? Who bears responsibility for the sins of the past, and can we move beyond it?

Symphony Silicon Valleyhttp://www.symphonysiliconvalley.orgConstruction Zone: Musicians at Work!Part 1: Concert -- Symphony Silicon Valley (55 mins.)
How do composers build a piece of music for an orchestra? What kinds of framework do they use? Join conductor Peter Jaffe and Symphony Silicon Valley on a trip into the "Construction Zone" and find out! Your students will learn how to listen to music in a new and fun way as they are taught about musical forms and patterns, and then hear the Symphony bring them to life. Maestro Jaffe makes learning entertaining and interactive, and hearing the entire orchestra play the music -- from J.S. Bach's Little Fugue to John Williams' Harry Potter -- makes the entire event unforgettable!
Part 2: Visit -- The Tech (45 mins. to as long as you wish to stay)
Double the value of your field trip day. Following each Symphony Silicon Valley concert, your class can visit the Tech Museum (just two blocks from the California Theatre) to investigate connections between music, science, and math. Museum staff will help students with special hands-on activities created for this collaboration. Students will search the galleries for musical clues that will lead them to deeper exploration of musical exhibitions.
