Making America Home
Antonin Dvorak wrote his "American" Quartet during a three-year stay in America, where he traveled from his native Bohemia (the Czech Republic) in the 1890s. He grew homesick in a strange new country, and became so excited when he met other Bohemians that he wrote the "American" Quartet in three days! They combine urban elements and rap to their outreach and make connections in their presentations by coupling together, for example, Haydn and hip-hop, morphing the two together, often to the glee of students and enthusiastic amusement of adults. In breaking down the mechanics of popular music for students, they have found that students can more easily identify with the vital music of centuries past. It's About Time
Part 1: Concert Symphony Silicon Valley
Rhythm surrounds us in our daily lives, though we often ignore it. But in music, rhythm is frequently the first thing we notice. Conductor Peter Jaffee will take us on an entertaining journey, introducing the orchestra and its music and moving from simple to increasingly complex rhythms or meters along the way. How do we beat 7/4? How does it make us feel? Learning to identify the rhythms embedded in excerpts from Beethoven to Brubeck gives students a pathway into orchestral music, helping them to listen and enjoy.
Part 2: Visit The Tech
Make the most of your trip to downtown San José. Following each Symphony Silicon Valley concert, students can visit The Tech Museum of Innovation to try their hands at making music, art or film in an exhibit opening in March 2009. Arab Film Festival
www.aff.org
Schools at the Arab Film Festival (San Jose)
The Arab Film Festival (AFF), now in its 12th year, promotes cross-cultural understanding by presenting films that explore the complex social, political and personal issues confronting the Arab community. Films selected especially for high school students focus on celebrating the differences and shared values of many cultural groups that create our community. A discussion with the filmmaker or local expert on the film's content will follow the film. Study materials will be provided to participating teachers.
Film: SLINGSHOT HIP HOP
Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank as they discover hip hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. The film begins with Tamer, Suhell, and Mahmoud of DAM, the first ever Palestinian hip hop group, from their early, awkward recording attempts in an Israeli studio to fiery, sold-out shows in Europe. We experience their politicization with the outbreak of the second Intifada, their emergence as community leaders, and their years-long struggle to produce an album in spite of crushing poverty. Through DAM we meet Mahmoud Shalabi, an irreverent rapper from Akka, along with solo R&B artist Abeer and rap group Arapeyat, young women pushing up against cultural boundaries to emerge as talented artists in the Palestinian hip hop scene.
From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them. Slingshot Hip Hop is a reflection of the rappers themselves, an inspiring union between the Palestinian struggle and this Black American art form gone global.

It’s Paris, a city renowned for its artistic freedom. But it’s 1941, and the German occupation has established a paranoid culture at its most oppressive. Pablo Picasso has been brought to a storage vault to authenticate three paintings that have been recently “acquired” by the Germans. The beautiful, mysterious and art-obsessed Miss Fischer, an adjunct to the Ministry of Culture in Berlin, has the arduous and compelling task of interrogating the man who painted Guernica. When the true purpose of Miss Fischer’s mission is revealed, they enter into an intense and passionate game of cat-and-mouse. This provocative and witty play, by one of America’s most widely produced playwrights, sizzles under the scrutiny of art, politics, sex and censorship, as the artistic genius is forced to justify his creativity.
