City of San José Environmental Sustainability Plan
ESP LogoThe City of San José is a leader in sustainability, from recycling and waste diversion to water reuse and renewable energy. Now the City is creating an Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) that aims to establish San José as a global pioneer in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) related to energy, mobility (transportation), and water through innovation and community engagement.

How we got here
The plan builds upon the City’s Green Vision, established in 2007, which promotes a broad range of objectives, including clean-tech jobs, renewable energy, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable development.

In December 2016, the City Council approved funds to develop the Environmental Sustainability Plan.

What the plan will do
  1. Analyze and consolidate existing environmental goals (San José Green Vision, Envision San José 2040 General Plan, San José Bike Plan 2020, and more) into a comprehensive new strategy
  2. Gather input from an array of stakeholders, including San José residents, experts from around the globe, city leaders, businesses, and community partners
  3. Develop short- and long-term measurable objectives
  4. Identify potential funds and develop innovative financing strategies
  5. Put the City on a pathway to meeting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets of the Paris climate agreement

Why it's important
The Environmental Sustainability Plan aims to enhance the lives of all San José residents. A critical element of the plan will be robust engagement of stakeholders, particularly the public, to ensure it is tailored to the needs and characteristics of a diverse and dynamic city. The plan will empower residents and businesses to assume ownership of the city’s future and ensure San José continues to thrive, innovate and lead throughout the 21st century.
